State Meet Results

Another Track & Field Season has come to an end as the State Track Meet is in the books. (full results)

Our young 4x100m team turned in a clean race, difficult to do under the pressure of the State stage! They finished 22nd.

Jr- Kelsey Johnson ran a clean race as well in the 100m Hurdles but was off her PR by .20 seconds. She finished 22nd.

8th grader- Lauryn Hall ran a faster time in the 100m Dash than she qualified with at Section but was off her best time as well. She finished 16th.

9th grader- Gabrielle Griner didn’t have the day she was looking for in the Pole-vault. She cleared 9′ on her first try but couldn’t quite dial her jump in for the next height of 9-6 and finished in a tie for 12th.

Jr- Rob Russell had a much better day in the Pole-vault. He tied his School Record, PR height of 13 feet and tied just outside the points, for 9th.

Our Stars for this meet though, were Sr- Anthony Parameswaran and Jr- Kai Perkins .

Kai got off her 3rd longest throw of this year in the Discus, beating her Section qualifying throw and earning a 6th place in the STATE! This put her AND the girls team in the points!

Anthony ran two of the best races in his life, setting NEW SPARKMAN RECORDS in both the 1600m and 3200m!  In the 1600m, Anthony finished just outside the points in 9th place. However in the 3200m Anthony placed 6th, putting the Sparkman boys on the Score Board!

Over all, of the 143 teams that made it to the State meet, Sparkman finished 28th in the Girls division and our Boys finished 25th.

Meet your 2014 STATE QUALIFIERS!

Anthony Parameswaran
Anthony_cu
Sr- Anthony Parameswaran is our DOUBLE qualifier!
Anthony qualifies in the 1600m and the 3200m distances and is the current SHS Record Holder for both. Anthony has been a strong presence on the team since his Sophomore year and has done well this year, with over 12 trips to the medals podium(including 3 Firsts) and becoming the team’s top points scorer. He even had a 3rd in the 800m this year and just missed qualifying in that event by 2 places. Despite all of that, this will be his FIRST trip to the State Track Meet. Anthony is currently the 10th ranked 6A boy in the 3200m and 15th in the 1600m.

Rob Russell
Rob_medal
Jr- Rob Russell is our other State representative for the BOYS, finishing in a Tie for 2nd in the Polevault. It’s hard to believe that Rob only started pole-vaulting last year. At that time he was scrambling to even make the qualifying height! This year Rob has been to the medals podium for the Polevault, 7 times(including 3 Firsts) and holds the SHS Record for this event. He is our 2nd highest, boys points scorer.

Rob has participated in 3 other events this year and has been pre-paring himself to once again participate in the State Decathlon.

Kai Perkins
photo(12)
Jr- Kai Perkins qualified for State with a medal winning 3rd place in the Discus.
Kai started throwing Discus as an 8th grader, placing as high as 7th in a Varsity meet that year. Since then she has been a consistent source of points for our Senator Girls, finishing in the points all but twice! This year she has been on the medals podium 6 out of 7 times and 3 of those were for Firsts!  Kai has also competes in the Shot Put and has thrown the Javelin.
This will be Kai’s first trip to State Competition. She is currently the 4th ranked 6A Girl and 10th ranked Girl overall in the State for the Discus.

Kelsey Johnson
Kelsey_3rd
Jr- Kelsey Johnson made it to the State Meet the hard way, by earning a “wild card” in the 100m Hurdles. Kelsey ran a NEW SHS RECORD time in that event at Sectionals but finished 6th.
There doesn’t seem to be an event that Kelsey can’t do if she puts her mind to it! Last year as a Sophomore she entered the State Heptathlon(7 events in just 2 days!) and showed very well.
Kelsey is the owner of FIVE current SPARKMAN SCHOOL RECORDS, 2 of them set just this season! She started running the 100m Hurdles last year and the 14 finals she has run since then … she finished in the points all but 2 times! She was also the SHS Girl’s TOP POINTS SCORER heading into sectionals.
This will be Kelsey’s second trip to the State Track Meet in the 100m Hurdles.

Gabrielle Griner
IMG_9353_sm
9th grader Gabrielle Griner, struggled a bit for the first time all year in the Polevault, but still managed to finish 4th and earn her qualifying spot to the State Meet.
Gabrielle has been Polevaulting for Sparkman since she was in the 7th grade. In that time she has been in 21 – Outdoor Season, Varsity meets and has finished in points scoring position for all but 2 of those – both of which were State Track Meets. One of those State Meet trips, (last year) she finished 9th!  This last season she has really come into her own, going to the medals podium in every meet she entered except the Section Meet, scoring 5 second place, 1 third and her FIRST Varsity win!
Gabrielle is the current Sparkman Record holder in the Girl’s Polevault. This will be her third trip to the State Track Meet. She is currently the 10th ranked 6A Girl and 15th ranked Girl over all in the State.

Lauryn Hall
Lauryn Hall2
8th grader  Lauryn Hall is the surprise qualifier for this year. In just her 4th ever time to compete in the 100m dash, she finished 5th – earning her way to the State Track Meet!
Being that she is so new to the team we don’t have much to tell you about her. Her time of 12.57 seconds in the finals was only 3 tenths of a second out of the medal position. She also just narrowly missed qualifying for State in the 200m, finishing 6th in the finals.
Lauryn will is also one of the members of our State Qualifying 4x100m team!

Girls 4x100m Team

Our Girls 4x100m has really done well for themselves.
Though new on the scene, they are turning out times very close to the school record for this event!
As they gain experience with starts and hand-offs, they just might break the school record at State!
(8th) Lauryn Hall – Our 100m, State Qualifier!
(8th)Milan Hunt – This is also Milan’s first year to run track and her 2nd Varsity meet.At this year’s N.A. JV Championship she took 10th in the 100m and 16th in the 200m.
(9th)Aubrey Parker – Aubry ran track for Sparkman last year. As an 8th grader she placed 2nd in the 200m dash at the North Alabama JV Championships and this year placed 4th. This Section meet was her 2nd Varsity competition of the season.
(8th)Alessea Rice – Another of our JV girls that has stepped into the limelight. Alessea placed 5th in both the 100m and 200m at this years North Alabama JV Championships. This Section meet was her 2nd Varsity competition of the season.

There are a lot of way’s to evaluate a Track Season. Things like team finishes and trophies, individual medals and points. Since the ultimate goal of having a JV team though, is to be developing the next generation of Varsity level Track & Field athletes, the best  measure of the season might be things like performance in practices, P.R’s, number of starts out of the blocks, experience with getting cut-off in a distance race or making that clutch throw on a last attempted. All things that help develop you as an athlete.

That being said, the typical way of evaluating Varsity performance is compare the points each athlete has scored for the team. So just for fun, here is the results of a tally of points scored by each athlete. Typically the only JV meet that has “official” results is the Championship. This year we got lucky though and had a “regular” season meet scored.  Points are assigned for each finishing position 1st thru 8th. Points awarded for a Relay are evenly divided between all 4 members of that team. Thus the fractional scores some athletes have. Also, in the case of a positional tie, the points for that postion and the next are added together and divided between the tied athletes. This sometimes leads to fractional points.

Coming in first for the Girls is 9th grader Gabrielle Griner with 20 points! Gabrielle’s points disadvantage comes from only doing one event. Doing it well though, means 10 points for a win … and she had two. Gabrielle is the 3 time JV Champion in the Polevault.

Second place, just 2 points back was 9th grader Aubry Parker. Aubry scored a 2nd, a 4th and was on two points scoring relay teams.

Third was 8th grader Lauryn Hall. Lauryn scored a 2nd at the Championship and was on TWO winning relay teams!

First for the boys, 9th grader Jake Russell  showed his versatility. He had a win, a 2nd, a 3rd and was on a points scoring relay team. Jake is also our top scoring JV Track & Field Athlete! Jake was this years JV Champion in the 1600m.

Coming in second for the boys is 9th grader Darryl Bowden. Darryl also had a win to go with his 3rd, 5th place finishes. He was also on a points scoring relay team. Jake was this year’s JV Champion in the Long Jump.

Third was 9th grader Chase Parker. Chase scored a 2nd in the 100m dash and was on two points scoring Relay Teams.

2014 North Alabama JV Championship

It’s the day after the 2014 Metro Area Championship and I am STILL trying to get warmed back up! At start time the temperature was 47 degrees and dropping with a NWS “High Wind” advisory in effect! Just before the meet started we had measured wind gusts in the Monrovia area of 22mph!

This didn’t stop our Senators though. Our JV athletes claimed 3 new Individual Champions and a Girls 4x100m crown!
Over all, we finished in the points in 18 events and had athletes take home 5 medals!
Our Boys team finished 6th and our Girls finished 8th.

This was one of the best seasons our JV Track & Field Teams have had and bodes well for future Varsity squads!
(Full Results HERE)

Here Are Our New Champions!

9th graderJake Russell Won the Boys 1600M (last year he placed 2nd) and placed 4th in the High Jump.
Jake is currently the 9th ranked Freshman in the State in the 1600, just 15 seconds behind 1st.

9th GraderDaryl Bowden Won the Boys Long Jump. Daryl also took 5th in the High Jump (with a NEW PR) and took 5th in the 100m Hurdles. Daryl’s winning jump was more than a foot longer than his mark in last year’s Championship, in which he placed 9th.

9th grader– Gabrielle Griner Won the Girls Polevault. Gabrielle has been vaulting for Sparkman since the 7th grade and her win last night made her a THREE TIME JV CHAMPION in that event!
Even more remarkable is that in 3 years of JV Pole Vault competition, Gabrielle is UNDEFEATED. She finishes her JV career with a record of 15-0-0 !
When you take into consideration factors other than those she can control (weather, injuries, just pure bad luck), this is quite an accomplishment.
Gabrielle is currently the 2nd ranked Freshman in the state. Her record 10′ jump is equal to the girl in first but came later in this season.

And our Champion Girls 4x100m Relay Team has a lot of youth on it but that didn’t seem to be a problem.
The members of that team were-
(8th)Lauryn Hall, (8th)Milan Hunt, (9th)Aubrey Parker and (8th)Alessea Rice
