Athletic Physicals at SHS on 5/23/13

Physicals will be administered in Gym 1 @ Sparkman High May 23rd, 5pm at an extremely fair cost of $10.

If you plan on participating in Cross Country or Track and Field within the next year, YOU WILL HAVE TO HAVE A PHYSICAL and this is an excellent opportunity to get that taken care of.

Last year they only had one of these “We bring the physical TO YOU” events, so please take advantage of it.
Also – if you have any reason to believe you will be participating in more than one sport please make a copy of the physical before turning it in to the school so you can use it again for the next sport.

We had numerous athletes that were not able to participate in T&F due to not having the proper paperwork. This was probably the most disappointing aspect of this T&F season so we are trying to make everyone aware of these forms so it does not happen again. The schools are not responsible for transferring paperwork from one sport to another – so please remember to make a copy!

Uniform Return

It is time to get those Track Team uniforms turned back in.

– 10th through 12th grade: Coach Jones at the High School
– 9th grade: Coach Gover at the 9th grade school
– Monrovia Middle School: Mrs. Underwood at the MMS Spring Banquet (May 14th)

– Sparkman Middle: To the front office

This is not one of the more “glamorous” aspects of track but just as neccesary. 🙂

Thanks!

State Track Meet

Congratulations to all of our Senator Track Team members who competed at state this year.

For some it was not quite the season ending they were hoping for and for others it spoke highly of meets to come!

At sectionals, Senior Myles Johnson was a surprise qualifier in the boys 300m Hurdles. He had dropped nearly 2 seconds off of his PR to make the state meet and setting a NEW Sparkman High Men’s record in that event! He was unable to improve on that mark at state but still managed to run his 2nd fastest time ever in 300m H.

Ben Dailey
had qualified for an amazing 3 events at state but was unable to improve on any of his marks. The 12th grader has had a phenomenal season, scoring 3 times as many points as his next highest scoring team mate and setting THREE new Sparkman Men’s records. As he gradulates, he leaves behind an amazing FIVE school records with his name on them … and he may not be fished yet! Next week he will be competing in the State High School Decathlon.

12 grader Brianca Trammell has also had an amazing season.
In the girls 100m hurdles, she finished in point scoring position in every meet she entered and had FIVE podium finishes. She also finished in the points 3 times in the 300m Hurdles this season and in her one try at the long jump she finished 5th!
At the State meet she turned in her 2nd best time ever for the 100m H which scored her 14th out of the 24 competitors.
She leaves Sparkman owning the Indoor Track, School record for the 60m Hurdles.

Kelsey Johnson was another surprise qualifier to the State Meet… but maybe it shouldn’t have been much of a surprise. In the Girls 100m Hurdles she had 5 point scoring finishes in 6 races and 3 of those finishes put her on the podium!
At the state meet she finished 15th of 24 and set a brand new PR time for herself. Kelsey, who also currently ownes the Sparkman record in the Girls Triple Jump and the Three mile run is just a 10th grader so we can look forward to seeing even better marks from her over the next two years.

Gabrielle Griner hasn’t made it to Sparkman yet but is already leaving her mark. The Monrovia Middle School 8th grader finished in the points in every meet she Pole Vaulted in this year and finished on the podium 4 times. She won the Vestavia Hills “King of the Mountain Invitational” – MS Pole Vault, setting a new MEET RECORD by nearly a foot and she won the North Alabama, Jr. High Championships for the second year in a row. She qualified well at this years sectionals and at the State Meet she finished 9th of 24 vaulters, just one spot out of the points. Her vault of 9′ 6″ was a new PR and Sparkman Girls Pole vault Record!

4) Ben Dailey 137-9

Boys Pole Vault
4) Ben Dailey 11-6

It was the last regular meet of the year and saw many athletes rise to the challange!

Besides our STATE QUALIFIERS …
We had 4 NEW SHS RECORDS set and 6 athletes set new PR’s in 8 events!

Anthony Parameswaran set TWO new school records!
He ran a 4:45.75 in the 1600m and 10:21.58 in the 3200m.

Ben Dailey set a new record in the Men’s Javalin with a throw of 137-9 !

and the one of the big surprises of this meet was Myles Johnson who really stepped it up, improving his PR by almost 2 seconds in the 300m Hurdles with a 42.70 – Good enough for a school record and most likely … a trip to State!

“6A Sectionals” Preview

Now the season is at it’s end and here is where we find out if the hours of training and effort were enough.

While we have several Senators who are poised to make it to the State Track Meet, one of the beautiful things about this sport is that ANY athlete could suddenly find it within themselves to drop those extra seconds, to jump a foot farther, to put it ALL into a throw that goes 3 feet farther then they have ever thrown before. For many athletes, it can all suddenly “come together” in one meet and they will move up to the next level.
This Weekend could be that meet!

For 5 athletes, their seeding says that if they can hold up under the pressure and repeat their PR, if luck doesn’t suddenly turn against them and if their competitors don’t suddenly have that breakthrough meet … they should earn a place at the State Meet.

For the Girls –

Senior, Brianca Trammell in the 100m Hurdles
Her PR time of 17.27 has her as the 4th seed. The Hurdles are tricky though and the girl seeded 6th is just .39 seconds behind her. Brianca is a pro though and is just .12 seconds off the school record.

… and don’t count out Sophomore Kelcie Johnson who is seeded 7th in the 100 H. Kelcie’s PR is only .31 seconds away from the 5th seed and she has been improving her time in almost every meet. She could certainly be one of those that digs deep and runs away with a bid to State.

Sophomore Kai Perkins is another athlete looking to make her mark. With a PR of 99-03 she is seeded 4th in the Discus. She has been throwing since 2011 and this would be her first trip to State in this event.

Senior, Cicely Seldon is seeded right behind Kai with a throw 97-10. She also has been throwing Discus since 2011 and this would be her first trip to State as well.

Finally, there is Eight Grader, Gabrielle Griner. A year ago Gabrielle became the first student from Monrovia Middle School to qualify for the State Track Meet and hopes to make a return visit this year. Her school record Pole Vault of 9’4″ makes her the top ranked Girl’s, Middle School Vaulter in the state and has her seeded 3rd for the section meet.

The Boys

Senior, Ben Dailey has a LOT of weight riding on his shoulders.
Fortunately they are large shoulders.

He is currently seeded 4th in the 110M Hurdles. This is his third year to try and make it to state in the hurdles. He has cut nearly a second off his time every year for the last three and hopefully this year it will do the trick.

In the Javelin, Ben is seeded 5th. His recent school record throw of 136-01 put him into the seeded 5th and final qualifying spot and he will have to throw that or better if he hopes to throw at State. We believe he can!

Then there is the Polevault. Ben is currently seeded first in this event with his recent school record jump of 12’6″. In practice he has actually jumped much higher. This is a VERY technical sport though and as he proved last year, often your toughest competitor is yourself.
This is a whole new year though and it would not be at all surprising to see him set yet another school record in this event!

The fun begins Friday at 4pm and then picks up again Saturday morning at 9am!

Bob Jones Invitational

The last, regularly scheduled Varsity Meet of the year, The Bob Jones Invitational, is in the books and we had some record setting results!

Senior Ben Dailey really stepped it up for this one,

  • Winning the boy’s polevault,
  • taking 3rd in the High Jump,
  • 4th in the 110 Hurdles,
  • 5th in the Javelin

and setting THREE new school records while he was at it!
His new records are in the Polevault, High Jump and Javelin. Oh, and he set a new PR in that 4th place 110 Hurdles finish!
An awesome performance by this Sparkman Senator!

Other Senators turned in good performances as well with 16 of our athletes recording new PRs, and 4 finishing in scoring positions.
These were:
Girls

Gabrielle Griner   – 4th, Polevault
Brianca Trammel – 7th, 100m Dash
Cicely Seldon         – 8th, Discus

Boys
Rob Russell            – 5th, Polevault

JUST 12 DAYS!

It is just 12 days (for some, just 11) until the State Section qualifying meet!

What are you willing to do for 12 days? What is it worth to you to go to state?
An extra lap at the track? Another half hour of jumps or throws when others have gone home? Maybe you skip that bag of chips or do an extra set of push-ups before you climb into bed … and then when you get up in the morning?

Just 15 days. What are you willing to do?

Busy Day for SHS Track!

Today featured both the 2nd day of the Metro Area Championships AND the last JV meet of the year before the JV Championship.
