VICTORY at Fairview !!!!

The year has certainly gotten off to a great start!
This Saturday’s Fairview Invitational proved another chance for our Sparkman Runners to shine.

2013 Fairview Invitational CC meet.

(complete SHS results and scoring can be found by clicking here)

Clearly the Highlite is the FIRST PLACE TEAM finishes for the JV Girls and Varsity Boys but you can’t overlook the individual performances that got us there. These include SEVEN top 10 finishes (with a third and a FIRST), 15 NEW PR’s and a NEW SCHOOL RECORD!

It’s exciting to think where this season may go if we can continue to build on these PR’s!

Noteable –
On the Girls JV team, 8th graders Savanah Wilson and Renita Vander Schaaf both had NEW PR’s and Renita’s was good for an individual FIRST PLACE finish!

The Boys JV finished just outside the a podium position. 9th grader Steven Underwood set a NEW PR as he finished 10th leading the JV squad to a Team, 4th place finish.

The Varsity Girls put in a good showing as well but with only 4 girls entered, they did not qualify for team scoring. None the less, all 4 of our girls set NEW PR’s for the 5k distance and front runner Kelsey Johnson finished with an individual 5th!

The Varsity Boys were on fire!
All 9 of our SHS runners entered in this event set NEW PRs with Bailey Herfurth, bailey placing 9th, Jake Russell placing 7th and Anthony Parameswaran taking 3rd place and setting a NEW SPARKMAN RECORD in for the 5k distance.

It was another great showing by Sparkman runners at the

Randolph School Cross Country Classic!

Both our Boys AND Girls JV teams PLACED 3RD and we had 3 JV runners finish with individual medals including 9th grader Jake Russell who WON the Boys 2 mile!
Jake came with in 10 seconds of breaking his old school record for this distance!

9th grader Harrison Miller’s 3rd Place finish was also a great performance and amazing in that he TIED his old PR for the 2 mile. How you run 2 miles over hill and dale and through water and manage to match an old time to the 100th of a second is beyond me!

Fellow 9th grader Steven Underwood also had a good run, turning in a PR time for this distance.

For the JV Girls, Renita Vander Schaaf was again on the podium with a 3rd Place finish and a new PR.
Fellow 8th grader Savanah Wilson also ran a new PR for this distance.

For the Varsity Girls, 11th grader Kelsey Johnson led the way to a team finish of 6th. Kelsey finished just outside the top 10 (11th) but turned in a PR performance in this, her third 5k race.

The Varsity boys also turned in a solid performance.
Our squad of 10th graders finished with a team place of 11th.

JV GIRLS TAKE 2nd … Scottsboro CC Invitational !!!

JV Girls Take 2nd!

The Scottsboro CC Meet was a great one for our JV Girls and over-all, saw improvement among all our squads.

Complete results can be found on our 2013 CC Schedule/Results page.

In the JV Girl’s 2 mile we had 4 girls set NEW PR’s and 8th grader Renita Vander Schaaf took back her School Record from Emilia Poole with a 13:50.07 in the 2.1 mile race. This time was good enough for an individual 5th in the field of 123 entries.

JV Team Members included –

Over all we had 15 athletes set NEW PRs and 4 others who ran a new season’s best time!
Good going Senators!

JV Boys 2.1 mile, new PRs –

Our Sparkman squads were heavily loaded to with “novice” competitors. 15 of our 27 runners were competing in their very first race but if they were nervous they didn’t show it.

Trainer (sports injury) Help Available @ SHS

Some weeks back we were introduced to Mr.Joe Lemery, one of the Huntsville Hospital TOC provided trainers that are available in the SHS training room for any SHS athlete. Not only is this expert “sports medicine” assistance but it’s FREE!

I have since had the need for them to look at my daughter and can highly recommend them. In her case, she had developed soreness in her knees and it was the sort of thing where it didn’t seem bad enough to warrant making an appointment with our family physician but nagging enough to make me worry. I sent an e-mail to Mr. Lemery and they had my daughter and I meet with them at SHS the next afternoon. We now can continue training without worrying that she is damaging herself.

If your student has any sort of questionable muscle/ligament/joint pain I recommend getting in touch with these guys and if you are dealing with a definite injury, check with them first as they can refer you to a physician specialist and get you in to see them in the shortest time possible.

Congradulations to our Heptathletes & Decathletes!

Having the ability to compete in multiple events is always impressive. Being able to compete in all of these events over a two day period is something special. A test not of who is the best in one event but who is the over-all best athlete.
This year, we have 4 of these VERY special athletes.

While winning an individual event carries prestige and pride, the competitors receive points no mater what place they finish and these points are then added up. So an athlete who can turn in multiple top ten finishes can beat the athlete who finishes first in one event but last in another.

For the girls there is the Heptathlon.
Day one has them competing in the 200m, 100m Hurdles, High Jump, and Shot Put.
Day two has them in the 800m, the Long Jump, the Javelin.

Sparkman had two women up for this challenge.
Senior, Briannca Trammell and Sophomore, Kelsey Johnson.

Briannca turned in a solid performance, competing in several events for the first time and getting a NEW PR of 14′-8.5″ in the long jump. Over-all, she finished 46th with 2173 points.

Kelsey was also up to the challenge finishing all 7 events, getting a NEW PR of 4′-5.25″ in the High Jump and finishing 33rd with a NEW Sparkman Girl’s record – 2747 points. With two more years of High School competition to go, look for more records from this woman!

For the Decathlon, the boys get an extra 3 events.
Day one sees them battling it out in the 100m, 400m, High Jump, Long Jump and Shot Put.
Day two has them in the 110 Hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin and THEN the 1500m.

Sparkman had two Men who accepted this challenge.
Senior, Ben Dailey and Sophomore, Rob Russell.

(video of their Polevault can be found HERE http://youtu.be/nXSdfU9-FxM).

Rob finished well in several events (13th in the High Jump, 11th in the Pole Vault, 20th in the High Jump) and had NEW PRs in the 400m (1:02.09) and the Long Jump (17′-2.25″ , an improvement of over a foot!) and tied his PR in the Pole Vault (10’6″). Over-all he finished 38th with 3571 points. Another Sparkman athlete with a bright High School career still ahead!

Ben continued a remarkable season with his showing in the Decathlon.
His first day was highlighted by a 16th place finish in the Long Jump (NEW PR 17′-5″), 7th place finish in the High Jump and 5th in the Shot Put (NEW PR 36′-0.25″)!
Combined with solid finishes in the 100m (NEW PR of 12.56) and 400m (NEW PR of 57.34) he ended the day in 19th place!

… The he really turned it on.

Day two Ben took 5th in the 110m Hurdles, 7th in the Discus (NEW PR 93′-10.75″), 8th in the Pole Vault and 5th in the Javelin (NEW PR & SCHOOL RECORD 144′-4.25″ smashing his old record by nearly 10 FEET !)

His stellar performance scored him a NEW Sparkman School Record, 4906 points in the Decathlon and a

5th PLACE FINISH!!!

Sparkman can truly be proud of the way we were represented by these athletes.
