VICTORY at Fairview !!!!

The year has certainly gotten off to a great start!
This Saturday’s Fairview Invitational proved another chance for our Sparkman Runners to shine.

2013 Fairview Invitational CC meet.

(complete SHS results and scoring can be found by clicking here)

Clearly the Highlite is the FIRST PLACE TEAM finishes for the JV Girls and Varsity Boys but you can’t overlook the individual performances that got us there. These include SEVEN top 10 finishes (with a third and a FIRST), 15 NEW PR’s and a NEW SCHOOL RECORD!

It’s exciting to think where this season may go if we can continue to build on these PR’s!

Noteable –
On the Girls JV team, 8th graders Savanah Wilson and Renita Vander Schaaf both had NEW PR’s and Renita’s was good for an individual FIRST PLACE finish!

The Boys JV finished just outside the a podium position. 9th grader Steven Underwood set a NEW PR as he finished 10th leading the JV squad to a Team, 4th place finish.

The Varsity Girls put in a good showing as well but with only 4 girls entered, they did not qualify for team scoring. None the less, all 4 of our girls set NEW PR’s for the 5k distance and front runner Kelsey Johnson finished with an individual 5th!

The Varsity Boys were on fire!
All 9 of our SHS runners entered in this event set NEW PRs with Bailey Herfurth, bailey placing 9th, Jake Russell placing 7th and Anthony Parameswaran taking 3rd place and setting a NEW SPARKMAN RECORD in for the 5k distance.

JV GIRLS TAKE 2nd … Scottsboro CC Invitational !!!

JV Girls Take 2nd!

The Scottsboro CC Meet was a great one for our JV Girls and over-all, saw improvement among all our squads.

Complete results can be found on our 2013 CC Schedule/Results page.

In the JV Girl’s 2 mile we had 4 girls set NEW PR’s and 8th grader Renita Vander Schaaf took back her School Record from Emilia Poole with a 13:50.07 in the 2.1 mile race. This time was good enough for an individual 5th in the field of 123 entries.

JV Team Members included –

Over all we had 15 athletes set NEW PRs and 4 others who ran a new season’s best time!
Good going Senators!

JV Boys 2.1 mile, new PRs –
Jake Maier,    Kyler Waters and    Isaiah Vasquez

Varsity Girls 5k PRs –
Kelsey Johnson,    Lauren Reza and    Erin McNabb

Varsity Boys 5k PRs –

Trainer (sports injury) Help Available @ SHS

Some weeks back we were introduced to Mr.Joe Lemery, one of the Huntsville Hospital TOC provided trainers that are available in the SHS training room for any SHS athlete. Not only is this expert “sports medicine” assistance but it’s FREE!

I have since had the need for them to look at my daughter and can highly recommend them. In her case, she had developed soreness in her knees and it was the sort of thing where it didn’t seem bad enough to warrant making an appointment with our family physician but nagging enough to make me worry. I sent an e-mail to Mr. Lemery and they had my daughter and I meet with them at SHS the next afternoon. We now can continue training without worrying that she is damaging herself.

If your student has any sort of questionable muscle/ligament/joint pain I recommend getting in touch with these guys and if you are dealing with a definite injury, check with them first as they can refer you to a physician specialist and get you in to see them in the shortest time possible.

Note: If you call the Sparkman office, just ask for “Trainer Joe”.

In the State Decathlon we had Rob Russell and 5th place finisher, Ben Dailey.
In the Heptathlon we had Briannca Trammell and Kelsey Johnson.

2013 Sparkman T&F Team

The 2013 Sparkman Track Team

Athletic Physicals at SHS on 5/23/13

Physicals will be administered in Gym 1 @ Sparkman High May 23rd, 5pm at an extremely fair cost of $10.

If you plan on participating in Cross Country or Track and Field within the next year, YOU WILL HAVE TO HAVE A PHYSICAL and this is an excellent opportunity to get that taken care of.

Last year they only had one of these “We bring the physical TO YOU” events, so please take advantage of it.
Also – if you have any reason to believe you will be participating in more than one sport please make a copy of the physical before turning it in to the school so you can use it again for the next sport.

We had numerous athletes that were not able to participate in T&F due to not having the proper paperwork. This was probably the most disappointing aspect of this T&F season so we are trying to make everyone aware of these forms so it does not happen again. The schools are not responsible for transferring paperwork from one sport to another – so please remember to make a copy!

Uniform Return

It is time to get those Track Team uniforms turned back in.

– 10th through 12th grade: Coach Jones at the High School
– 9th grade: Coach Gover at the 9th grade school
– Monrovia Middle School: Mrs. Underwood at the MMS Spring Banquet (May 14th)

– Sparkman Middle: To the front office

This is not one of the more “glamorous” aspects of track but just as neccesary. 🙂

Thanks!

“6A Sectionals” Preview

Now the season is at it’s end and here is where we find out if the hours of training and effort were enough.

While we have several Senators who are poised to make it to the State Track Meet, one of the beautiful things about this sport is that ANY athlete could suddenly find it within themselves to drop those extra seconds, to jump a foot farther, to put it ALL into a throw that goes 3 feet farther then they have ever thrown before. For many athletes, it can all suddenly “come together” in one meet and they will move up to the next level.
This Weekend could be that meet!

For 5 athletes, their seeding says that if they can hold up under the pressure and repeat their PR, if luck doesn’t suddenly turn against them and if their competitors don’t suddenly have that breakthrough meet … they should earn a place at the State Meet.

For the Girls –

Senior, Brianca Trammell in the 100m Hurdles
Her PR time of 17.27 has her as the 4th seed. The Hurdles are tricky though and the girl seeded 6th is just .39 seconds behind her. Brianca is a pro though and is just .12 seconds off the school record.

… and don’t count out Sophomore Kelcie Johnson who is seeded 7th in the 100 H. Kelcie’s PR is only .31 seconds away from the 5th seed and she has been improving her time in almost every meet. She could certainly be one of those that digs deep and runs away with a bid to State.

Sophomore Kai Perkins is another athlete looking to make her mark. With a PR of 99-03 she is seeded 4th in the Discus. She has been throwing since 2011 and this would be her first trip to State in this event.

Senior, Cicely Seldon is seeded right behind Kai with a throw 97-10. She also has been throwing Discus since 2011 and this would be her first trip to State as well.

Finally, there is Eight Grader, Gabrielle Griner. A year ago Gabrielle became the first student from Monrovia Middle School to qualify for the State Track Meet and hopes to make a return visit this year. Her school record Pole Vault of 9’4″ makes her the top ranked Girl’s, Middle School Vaulter in the state and has her seeded 3rd for the section meet.

The Boys

Senior, Ben Dailey has a LOT of weight riding on his shoulders.
Fortunately they are large shoulders.

He is currently seeded 4th in the 110M Hurdles. This is his third year to try and make it to state in the hurdles. He has cut nearly a second off his time every year for the last three and hopefully this year it will do the trick.

In the Javelin, Ben is seeded 5th. His recent school record throw of 136-01 put him into the seeded 5th and final qualifying spot and he will have to throw that or better if he hopes to throw at State. We believe he can!

Then there is the Polevault. Ben is currently seeded first in this event with his recent school record jump of 12’6″. In practice he has actually jumped much higher. This is a VERY technical sport though and as he proved last year, often your toughest competitor is yourself.
This is a whole new year though and it would not be at all surprising to see him set yet another school record in this event!

The fun begins Friday at 4pm and then picks up again Saturday morning at 9am!
